Well, recently I had just been exchanging questions with Jeff Biggers, a writer for the Huffington Post. A lot has been going on with the Ethnic Studies struggle. It is clear that some people are not getting the message. I wish to make more of a video to explain my opinion and express the facts later. Now, to read a little you can click the link bellow to read the article and maybe have a bit of an idea of what I will talk about soon.

The First Semester Journey
Well, my first semester of college is over and I have got to say it was one of the craziest first semesters evers. It came to my attention that I wasn't in High School anymore. And that every class was crucial because:
A: I'm paying for them and B: Bad grades follow you throughout our lives.
Usually, I don't make blogs personal to me, but I will continue this blog and continue writing because I love it. I probably don't want to be a Journalist, but I want to improve my writing even more.
This blog will go on, because the struggle continues :)
Goodbye First Semester, and Hello winter brake :)

Through The Critical Lens
"Education
makes people easy to lead, but difficult to drive; easy to govern,
but impossible to enslave."
Chicano/a Movement
In the 1960's
the battles for Chicanos Studies and Ethnics studies began. The
Chicano Movement at Universities began to demand they be
allowed to learn about their own cultural background in their
schools. Many students felt they did not know enough about where they
came from and who they were. The movement at the time was also lead
by the youth, and it continues to be lead by the youth. The youth
empowerment went far, because in the late 1960's the youths work paid
off; the first Mexican American Studies/Chicano Studies were established.
Thought
throughout the decades there were a lot controversy against the
Mexican American Studies classes. It wasn't until 2006 when we began
going backwards to return to the past that got us right back to the
1960's. Fighting for our educational rights and fighting against
racism, fighting for our culture.
Tom Horne,
former Superintendent of Public Education and now State Attorney
General is one of the main opponents. Tom Horne is known for his
participation in attempting (and after many tries) succeeding to
dismantle the Mexican American Studies Classes in the state of
Arizona. Horne, drafted the law HB 2281 after an event in
Tucson High School occurred in 2006. Dolores Huerta went in as a
public speaker. At one point when she was speaking Huertas said
“Republicans hate latinos” When it came to Hornes attention, he
sent a women by the name of Martha Duggan to speak on behalf of
Republican Latinos. Her argument was that she was a Latina
Republican, and that she did not hate her self.
Silent Protesters at Tucson High School
Tom Horne found
the action that the students took very disrespectful and that is when
he began his attacks on Ethnic Studies, Primarily and only focusing
only on the Mexican American Studies Classes.
In the law, it expresses that the Mexican American Studies classes Promotes the following:
-The overthrow of the United States government
Arizona Attorney General, Tom Horne
-Are designed primarily for pupils of a particular ethnic group
-Advocate for ethnic solidarity
The Law was
signed by Arizona State Governor Jan Brewer on May 11, 2010.
[Jan Brewer signed SB 1070 into law prior to signing HB 2281 into
law]
If things
weren't hectic before, they were going to be now.
When Tom Horne
was elected State Attorney General in November 2010, he found the
Mexican American Studies Classes illegal three hours before leaving
his position as State Superintendent of Public Education. The law
went to effect in January of 2011.
Jan Brewer, Governor of Arizona
“When
injustice becomes law, resistance becomes duty”
Students began
to take matters into their own hands. Walk outs were organized,
groups were organized and the community was putting the pressure on
the TUSD Government Board to defy the bill.
"In
schools today there's hundreds of problems like, irrelevant
curriculum...” Says Richard G. A Tucson High School Alumni
“Students must be seen in the curriculum and in the teacher.”
Richard G took Mexican American Studies cores both his Junior and
Senior year.
Richard
G. is a very important person in the movement. I asked him how the
classes affected him and his education, and he answered the
following “Before i took the classes i didn't value nor did i have
any interest in school or education.”
The
school board would hear testimonies a the Tuesday's school board
meetings. Students, Teachers, Parents both for and against the
classes. Everyone
had a purpose when they went to speak at the school board meetings.
Everyone wanted to do something, anything to preserve the classes.

M.E.Ch.A.
as well with the Raza Studies classes were being attacked by the
Teenage Republicans Club (TARS). Students from TARS had posted up
videos on Youtube of Latino Literature teacher Curtis Acosta’s
classroom, raising alarm about the “Revolutionary and Communist”
materials found on the posters and black board, namely that of a
student made sign saying, “Whose the illegal alien, pilgrim?”
TARS
started a petition claiming they didn’t feel safe at school with
such “hateful language” and sent the petition to numerous Arizona
Republicans, such as Senator Russell Pearce, Representative Jonathan
Paton, and Superintendent of Public Schools Tom Horne.
This is what led to the first piece of Anti-Ethnic Studies legislation SB 1108, which passed the Arizona House of Representatives in March 2008 and would ban all Ethnic Studies courses offered in AZ schools as well as “ethnic or cultural” student groups from organizing on campus."

My
question to her was what are asked to many of those students who take
the classes: Why is this struggle so important to you?
“It
is very important to me because I remember clearly it was in those
classrooms where I first became proud of who I was, on the inside and
outside. I never liked the appearance of my curly hair, and no matter
how trivial that sounds- the acceptance of your own hair is one of
the biggest obstacles a young half African American woman can
overcome when growing up in a society where you are constantly
reminded on a daily basis that only straight hair is beautiful. I saw
a picture of Angela Davis in a book, and cannot tell you the level of
pride I felt when I finally found a hero who looked
like
me.”
“The
aspect of self identity, and gaining the self identity and finding
who you are. Finding a place for yourself, somewhere you feel
comfortable” Comparing the two answers, Daniel Montoya is quite
similar to Leilani's.
John Huppenthal
Statistics
Compiled show that 95% of students who take the Mexican American
Studies courses graduate and 70% seek out higher education. Not only
that, but it closes the achievement gap.
Yet,
that is still was not enough to convince current Superintendent John
Huppenthal that these classes aren't promoting resentment or the over
throw of the government.
I
asked Leilani what she had witnessed fighting this battle for
education.
Community at the May 3 School Board Meeting
Each student is a bridge connecting the Ethnic Studies movement to their own neighborhood and community. The students are the LGBTQ community, the African American Community, The Native American community, the Religious community, the Pan-Asian community, Migrant community- 1st generation, 2nd generation, and undocumented. The Students are the artists, the writers, the film makers, the dancers, the athletes, the taggers, everything under the sun- as a collective, we represent. So when the times came it has been the student call for community support that brings out the most numbers.”
Leilani Clark, Daniel Montoya & 7 others take over.
“The
whole concept of UNIDOS was very similar to the reasons why PRE
needed to exist- to create that space for students to communicate
with one another on how they can further fight to defend Ethnic
Studies. UNIDOS has gone so far and beyond PRE simply for the fact
that true friendships formed inside this space. Each time I see a
photo of the different students together outside of political
setting, just ‘hanging out’; a Rincon student with a Sunny Side
student, a Tucson High student with a University High student, etc.
It honestly makes my heart grow. Those friendships are the most
powerful medicine we have in this battle- a battle that, when it all
comes down to it, is led by love.
Those friendships, more than anything, is truly what made it all worth it for me.”
Being
an activist isn't all its cut out to be, especially for the youth who
try to reach out to show that they are critical thinkers and
intellectual.

We
have to stay in the now, it’s good to look at the past for ideas
and inspiration, but nothing is the same, and you constantly have to
create a new reality every single day. To cling to the past and
expect the same results in the present and future blindsides you and
will almost always lead to failure.
You need a good support system to maintain a balance of leading a life in the movement, yet not becoming unhealthily absorbed by it. I am blessed to have such a supportive family that honored and respected the work I did, not everyone has that support base. This entire movement is all about fighting to reclaim your humanity, and that is something very hard to continue doing if you are alone.”

The
Ethnic Studies battle still continues and the attacks just keep
coming. In all of this chaos there is still people, youth and
community fighting for a cause. People remain strong and somehow find
a way to not give up on such a difficult task.
“I
still stand in awe of the absolute courage and bravery I saw in
students who were still in their teens- they made very ‘grown-up’
decisions and took a lot of ‘grown-up’ weight on their shoulders.
I still stand in disbelief today when I hear some of them telling me
that I, myself, helped to encourage some of that. I often feel it is
the other way around.

Revolutionary Weekend
This weekend I had the opportunity to go up to Phoenix and be part of the NACCS (National Association of Chicana and Chicano Studies) conference that was held at Arizona State University. The day consisted of Professors, MEChA, and the one and only Rudy Acuna. I had the honor to meet one of the biggest supporters of the Chican@ movement and author of many books,
As a member of UNIDOS, I had the chance along with Daniel Montoya to speak on a panel about the events that occurred in April and in May. After the Q&A many young adults came up to us seeking answers to their questions. For me, it is always rewarding hearing the voice of other people who want to know how to make a difference. It is also very rewarding when I see a community who supports the youth movement.
In case anyone else is interested in helping here are a couple ways:
Go to Board meetings:
Especially if you have a child, sibling or any person in the Tucson Unified School District, this is very crucial. Education in Arizona is not a priority, since there are immense budget cuts to support other unimportant causes.
Read the news and be updated:
So much goes on in in a state that is know for its harsh Anti-Migrant law SB 1070. Knowing what is going on can spark some interest in helping out the movement.
Spread UNIDOS story around:
Although UNIDOS made the news nation wide, there are still a lot of youth out there that have no idea what is going on. If you are a teacher, inform the students of what has been going on. It will empower them to take a stand. Having more community come together builds up more resistance and power.

Police Brutality, Who are they serving?
It is clear, and is proven that when officers are sent to peaceful protests, things end up getting ugly. In most cases, the officers spark up the conflicts. With them dressed in their Navy Blue Uniforms, with loaded guns and battons sttrapped around their waist, and rolling up in their cruisers that read the words 'Police' and the motto "Ready to Protect, Proud to Serve."
But the questions is: who are they protecting and who are they serving? It's bad to overgeneralize and portray all the officers in a negative way. But the way they've been handeling situations on Wall Street, it seems they are on the bad side of history. This doesn't just happen on Wall Street or the Occupy Movements, but in peaceful non-violent protest.
Take a look for you self, and see it with your own eyes:
Occupy California, Officer pepper sprays the peaceful protestors. Police Brutality.
Occupy Wall Street, officers injure Protestors. Police Brutality.
Now, the police brutality is everywhere. After April 26, in Tucson, Arizona. Ethnic Studies fighter youth UNIDOS take over the board meeting, preventing a vote to be made on turning the classes into elective. Youth chain themselves to the empty board members seats in the of a Non-Violent Civil Disobedience. The video bellow shows the action, where no one was hurt and no vote was made.
Then when the meeting was postponed, on May 3rd, this is what the meeting looked like. Here it is easy to see the police brutality.
Who are they serving? Who are they protecting? They sure aren't protecting us and clearly they do not let us excessive our rights.

Architect Down, More to Go.
AZ State Sen. Russell Pearce
It is said and known that Russel Pearce was one of the most powerful State Politicians in Arizona. Russell Pearce stood behind SB 1070, despite the lawsuits that from various government and civil rights groups. Russell Pearce also was the one behind changing the 14th Amendment. Pearce wanted to change the amendment so that it would deny automatic Citizenship to newborns of Undocumented parents. Pearce tried to convince and justify this act. According to Pearce those are 'Anchor Babies' Babies that are born here, sent back to the country their parents come from to raise them as Terrorists and bring them back with a Passport to terrorize America. That was not voted into law, and was denied.

In Occupy Tucson, protesters gather up at that occupation spot in Armory Park. Officers would return to the park at 10:30 P.M and give criminal citations to those occupants who refused to leave the public land. Of course those who were Cited were coming back to show that the community united, can never be divided.

Rest In Power Judy Burns
Judy Burns and a TUSD student at the April 26th meeting
Judy Burns voted against the Turnaround Model for Rincon High School and Palo Verde High School. Burns also advocated against turning the Ethnic Studies classes into electives. Burns was not afraid to step up and speak when she knew something was wrong. Her heart and mind were in the right place and she was equal when it came to letting others speak. Judy Burns was not afraid to raise her fist for revolution and for education.
As a member of UNIDOS I would like to thank Judy Burns for listening and standing up for what was right. She was so powerful and had so much strength. We will miss her and never forget. FIST UP FOR JUDY BURNS!

Apologies to La Raza
Current State Superintendent John Huppenthal will be at the Fox Theater today and so will protestors.
Huppenthal who ran his campaign vowing to "Stop La Raza" declared The Mexican-American Classes in violation of (A.R.S.) § 15-112) -HB 2281on June 15 2011. According to the $175K audits, the cirricuum was in no way violating the law, in fact they saw that the classes were positive and did not advocate to overthrow the United States Government. Huppenthal found the classes in violations and in compliance with HB 2281.
Not only did Huppenthal run a racist campaign, but he committed a class 6 fellony. Acording to Article 38-423, acording to public officers:
"A public officer authorized by law to make or give any certificate or other writing, who makes and delivers as true such a certificate or writing containing a statement which he knows is false, is guilty of a class 6 felony"?
Now why is Huppenthal still our superintendent, and why hasn't he apologized for harming teachers, students, and the community in which he should advocate for higher education? Why should we welcome him? When he doesn't welcome Education, especially not the Mexican American Studies classes?
Here is a video of Huppenthal declaring the classes in compliance with HB 2281.

Occupy Comments
I'm following the trail of Occupy Wall Street, not only is there an occupy here in Tucson (which I will be live blogging) But because it's on the news, and everyone is talking about it. I read the article 'Occupy' simple to stop and I commented with this bellow.
"In my opinion what people are doing out on Wall Street takes a lot of strength and courage. Not just to go out there, but continuing for such a long time. A lot of people may not agree with what they are doing and many people probably think they are not intelligent. No matter what any sort of boycott or occupation will be criticized. Sometimes taking it into their own hands is the only option they have. There is so many people making money from robbing others from the very little they have. Wall Street being one of the biggest."

iCapitalist?
On October 5, 2011 America lost one of the most revolutionary man in technology; Steve Jobs. Steve Jobs, the inventor of the iMac and iTouch passed away leaving behind a legacy. If we were to ask people on the street, we would get just that. Sir Steve Jobs left his prints on technology, our hearts and our lives.
But, did Steve Jobs just leave his revolutionary character behind or did he do more to those who helped make his products a success? Few know about Steve Jobs' and the harsh person he could be.
"Can anyone tell me what MobileMe is supposed to do?" Having received a satisfactory answer, he continued, "So why the fuck doesn't it do that?" out of What Everyone is Too Polite To Say About Steve Jobs post.
"You've tarnished Apple's reputation," he told them. "You should hate each other for having let each other down."
Or do people know what the condition that the working, underpaid citizens of his factory was like? [refer to What Everyone Ia Too Polite To Say About Steve Jobs]
If anyone is aware of what Capitalism is, here is the definition:

If anyone is aware of what Capitalism is, here is the definition:
"an economic system in which investment in and ownership of the means of production, distribution, and exchange of wealth is made and maintained chiefly by private individuals or corporations, especially as contrasted to cooperatively or state-owned means of wealth."
Now I ask you to read Steve Jobs, billionaire capitalist and think: Is it possible for anyone to become as wealthy as Steve Jobs, without the use of capitalism. Think about it in the point of Technology. Does his revolution inventions justify his harsh character and abused workers?
Real Steel
I was reading Movie reviews for an assignment and the best sight I could find with decent sized reviews was Seven Days. I was looking through trying to find a review of a movie I already watched. Then, I thought It would be better to read a review about a movie I haven't seen, maybe it will spark some interest.
I read a review about Reel Steel by Margot Harrison. The review gave a pretty simple explanation but I was still confused. The writer of this review states their point of view but there isn't quite a balance. I read more of a point of view than the movie it self. The writer does compare the Movie with other movies and dilemmas. The review had no "snark" to it. I got that they enjoyed the movie but it wasn't revolutionary in any way.

Penny for Your Thoughts?
Have you ever thought how bloggers made money, or if they made money at all? Or if blogging was a good way to have money coming in by just voicing your thoughts or writing a couple posts related to an event? Keep in mind there may be different types of blogging. Some blogs are used to just interact with people but some blogs are actually used for making money.
There are blogs that are used for selling or advertising a product or products. For example if you visit Mom Review Blog you will see that there are many products being advertise. The writer or writers in this blog make money by reviewing them or referring you to a link to purchase a product. Usually by clicking on the link to buy the product, the blogger gets paid for it.They don't get paid the amount that the product costs but a percentage of it. Blog posters may even sell their own product, which can make them earn more money depending on how well their sale goes.
Ads in blogs are also a way bloggers make money. If you see advertisement for other websites or stores in the blog page, they blogger was paid by the owners or the advertisers to have their ads placed there. That doesn't necessary mean the blogger recommends the product or the website, it's a way to earn some cash.
Blogs that use any of the two options above get paid for it. Keep in mind whether you can trust the links, the product or the reason why are reccomending the product or advertising a website.
Blogs like Three Sonorans are unpaid blogs, which means that no sort of money comes in. The blog (or blogs) have options of donation. Therefore anything donated goes strait to the blogger, but that doesn't mean everyday people donate money to the blogger. In cases like these the blog owner relies on some other sort of income.
In conclusion, blogging can be used to interact with people or for income purposes. This blog, is the kind whose purpose is to interact and inform readers. :)
RIP Mac Daddy

Jeff Biggers
huffingtonpost.com/jeff-biggers/
Jeff Biggers is an award wining author of Reckoning at Eagle Creek: The Secret Legacy of Coal in the Heartland, The United States of Appalachia, and In the Sierra Madre. His blogs mostly consist of stories about Civil rights, history in the making and the violations of humane rights and pointing out the truth of the Government in the U.S.
Jeff Biggers is always voicing the silenced voices and the right side of the story. When I read his blog I always feel pleased to see that he is voicing the truth. He backs his stories up with facts and events. It's the truth that everyone seeks, and the truth everyone should know.
"The questions beg:: Have the extremist Arizona politicians and their Tea Party supporters gone too far in their witch hunt of the Ethnic Studies Program, and at what point will the Civil Rights Division of the US Department of Justice be summoned for an investigation?"

David A. Morales
David A. Morales is the man behind Three Sonorans blog posts. The news being put out is mostly about Arizona and the continuing struggle.
Three Sonorans always is up to date on the Ethnic Studies battle, such as laws like HB 2281 (a law that bans Ethnic Studies from being taught in the Tucson Unified School District). It is always very informative and it never leaves me hanging or confused. I rely on this blog not just because of the information, but the amount of work that's put in it to keep it un-biased.
Gwaker
Gwaker has everything from music, gossip and actual news. It serves as a good web page to visit if you just want to roam random stories and actually get something out of it.
I like it because it has a little of everything. I am the kind of person that likes reading critical stories but at the same time I like to know about Music. This web blog gives me the option to see either of the two.
"It seemed impossible that Adele could make "Someone Like You" from her billion-selling album 21 sadder than it already was. But the British singer has done it with her new video, above. In black and white, she takes a solitary walk in the most romantic city in the world and sings about confronting a love she'll have to overcome."
The Daily Beast
The Daily Beast was founded in 2008 and used for breaking news and sharp commentary. It is full of news and information that can be accessed 24/7
What I liked about this blog is all of the news and stories it has posted. There is current news about Occupy Wall St. and news that actually matters. It isn't clustered, it is very organized and I can navigate without a problem or without getting frustrated.
"The financial industry has been moving away from downtown New York—and out of America—for years. If anything, these angry, ill-informed, purposeless protesters should be marching on Washington, says Stephen Carter."
Mashable
Mashable covers all around information. Not just news but technology and how it affects the the society or world we live in. This site is pretty handy and can give you a lot of information and doing what media does best; informs.

Can it Ever Get Better?
Last week Sunday, a child by the name Jamey Rodemeyer took his own life. 14 year old Jamey was bullied and harassed for being Gay. His bullying went beyond and got worse to the point where his formspring (a social network that let's you post comments/questions anonymously to the user) was even being used as a way to harass him. Jamey made a video called "It Gets Better" where he explains how he struggled and how Lady Gaga Has helped him love who he is.
Now the thing is this, is your child a bully, do parents know that their child bullies another kid? Also, should there be a law criminalizing bullying as hate crime? Jame Rodemeyer and Lady Gaga

Imagine if one day you see your son and the next moment you're receiving his body. A body wit h two gunshots to the chest, one to the shoulder, one through the mouth, with broken arms and cigarette burns on the face. Then soon after, you get a call that your daughters mutilated body is at the morgue. Her body cut in four pieces, and taking a life of an innocent person.
This video and article explain what Syria is going through, since the slaying of a son and the mutilation of a daughter. This is perfect example of how dangerous it is to be right, when the government is wrong.
Don't You Have A Heart?
“If you say that we should not educate children who have come into our state for no other reason than they've been brought there by no fault of their own, I don't think you have a heart.”-Rick Perry
By far, I am surprised that a "Conservative" from Texas would say something like this, because the right wing always gives you the negative. For those who don't know, Perry spent his first six years in politic as a Democrat. Now the controversy here is him not explaining what he meant correctly. The use of "I don't think you have a heart" is being looked down upon. Although, he could've explained better, ask your self what is the real issue here? Immigration or trusting someone like Rick Perry who obviously doesn't know to what political party to stick to. Or maybe we should pay attention to both and compare and contrast.
Wall Street Occupation.
(C)John W. Cohoen
Non-Violent Civil Disobedience is the active, professed refusal to obey certain laws, demands, and commands of a government, or of an occupying international power. The act refrains from any violent or anything that can be dangerous to others.
No Border Wall!
It is very ironic to me that the Government has commanded the building of a border to keep the U.S safe. Arguments always consist of false accusations or over generalization: they come into our country to steal jobs, harm our people or cause crime. But, do they not pay attention to the fact that their own border causes hundreds of deaths? Are they too greedy or too prideful to share what America has got to offer. Migrants help the economy very much because of their hardworking attitudes and whiling to make money the right way. So why not BURN THE BORDER AND MELT THE ICE?

I Am Troy Davis.
Troy Davis was executed yesterday at 11:00 P.M eastern in the state of Georgia. Troy was charged for a crime he didn't do. Despite the fact that 7 of the 9 witnesses changing their testimonies and the constant protests, occupations and petition signing to stop the execution, nothing worked. While you read this article, remember about Casey Anthony case. How white privilege is still an ongoing thing today and innocent people struggle everyday.

Journalism and the world.
Last week In journalism class a guy by the name Dylan Smith came into my class as a guest speaker. Dylan Smith is the editor of tucsonsentenial.com. He came to talk about what it is like as a journalist. He explained how the job of an editor and journalist is.
It was quite interesting to hear that all of the work he does is basically volunteer. They rely on their savings and donations for themselves and Thierry site. He said that it's about getting the truth out. Somebody has got to do it and that's why he is passionate for his work.
I respect the work of all of the journalist who seek to reveal the truth. Hearing Dylan Smith speak about it made me realize; it's not just about writing and getting views, it's about the truth that a lot of people won't tell.
It was an honor having Dylan Smith speak to us about his job. Visit the web page TucsonSentinel

Targeting he who targets you.

I feel like this is very self explanatory on what's going on with Social Security. This stuck out to me because I find this quite funny and very true, because it is time to target those like Rick Perry. Rick Perry targets Social Security, then citizens target you. In my opinion I can see the elderly man as a hero in this cartoon, because he know's what is going on and well, of course, he is not too happy about it. Here's a link to the Home Page page of the Political Cartoon.
Does Stegeman have the right to be hurt?
Video Caption: Ex-board President Mark Stegeman discussing how he feels about being shunned by the democrats. Take a look and see who TUSD has demoted because of his actions and failed leadership.
What is a democrat, what is the definition and does Ex-Board President Stegeman deserve the right to call himself a democrat?
Dem-o-crat (n): a person who believes in and practices the principle of equality of rights, opportunity, and treatment.
Stegeman categorizes himself as a democrat, but his actions have not been at all democratic. Unlike Michael Hicks (who is a member of the Tucson Unified School Districts Governing Board) who expresses his conservative views, Stegeman hides them. Instead of trying to preserve the Mexican American Studies program he chooses to find ways to destroy them. Not only is he: Violating international human rights but he is dismantling a successful program. A true democrat would see that the preservation of a class that teaches cultural history, and boosts up the graduation rate, is a good idea. Not only that but realizes that it’s education and that as a democrat, he takes in mind what the students want. Yes, students because it is their school district and their education. Mark Stegeman is now being shunned by other democrats for the approaches he has taken against the Latino community and his failed leadership.
